Steve S. Baker (of Brook Park) age 87, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 28th. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Jeanne (nee McNamee). Respected and adored father of Patricia (Joseph), Stephen (Jan) and Robert (Michelle). Treasured grandfather to Kaylee, Allyson, Joey and Stephen. Dearest brother-in-law to Kathleen McNamee, Lois Hanslik (Marc) and Marilyn McNamee (Dick Drumm). He was a cherished Uncle to many nieces and nephews.
A longtime friend and admired colleague to many. We celebrate and pay tribute to "our hero" in every sense of the word. Steve was very proud to carry on the McNamee family tradition by joining the Cleveland Fire Department in 1962, retiring after 31 years of service. He also served in the Honor Guard, as well as holding many positions in the Cleveland Firefighters American Legion Post 339.
He was honored to serve his country in the U.S. Army Corps, where he had the opportunity to travel Europe. In spite of being a double amputee, nothing held him back. He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He continued his love of fire fighting working in the fire alarm office after his accident - he really enjoyed being the firehouse cook.
Steve was bound and determined to continue golfing (even having special clubs made), bowling, water and jet skiing. He loved to travel far and wide. Steve was also called upon to help other amputees deal with their loss. His compassionate, encouraging manner showed many how to persevere. Although he married into an Irish family he celebrated his Polish heritage as well. The family would like to extend our most sincere appreciation and gratitude for all the healthcare workers and staff at North Park Senior Living in Brook Park, Arden Courts of North Royalton and Heartland Hospice Care. He will be missed beyond words.
Steve's final resting place will be at Ohio Western Reserve Cemetery in Seville. The family is planning a Celebration of Life Ceremony in the spring, details to follow at a later date. Donations in his memory can be made to Western Reserve Fire Education Center 310 Carnegie Avenue Cleveland Ohio 44115. Or, you can walk in his footsteps and Pay It Forward by doing someone a huge favor. He will be forever in our hearts and always an inspiration. Please smile in remembrance of a man who is truly one-of-a-kind. FAO KQA 216. SERVICES ENTRUSTED TO A. RIPEPI & SONS FUNERAL HOME, MIDDLEBURG HTS. (440) 260-8800
