Robert Chester Obituary

ROBERT J. CHESTER (“Bob”), age 78, passed away peacefully in his home on April 15, 2024, surrounded by his family. Beloved husband of Gail (nee Rogaliner) for nearly 52 years; devoted father of Jason (Nicole), Ryan (Lindsey), and Alison Maddie (Chris); cherished grandfather (“Pa”) of Nick, Kaitlyn, Jack, Luke, Madelyn, Olivia, Owen, and Emmalyn; dear brother of Michele Bilicki (deceased) (John), Bill (Linda), and Bonnie Kray (Tim); beloved uncle, great uncle and friend.

Bob was born in Cleveland, Ohio on February 18, 1946. He was predeceased by his parents, John (“Skip”) and Leona Chester (nee Hood). Bob was a graduate of Garfield Heights High School Class of 1964.  He was a man of many talents and interests.  Bob was a track star by day and he played the tenor saxophone in a rock and roll band, Dave and the Marvels, by night. In 1966, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a proud Vietnam Veteran. Bob was a radio operator in the 3rd Recon Battalion. He would entertain his platoon with stories of “Chet Puma, Famous Hollywood Film Star,” which he affectionately became known as to his fellow Marines.

When Bob returned from Vietnam he worked as a salesman. He met his wife, Gail, while working at Cole’s Shoe Store. Bob later graduated from Cleveland State University with a bachelor’s degree in education with a focus in history and social studies and spent the remainder of his career as a teacher. He spent a number of years instructing and mentoring at-risk youth. Bob had a passion for teaching and was the Cub Scout master of St. Peter’s School Pack 153 for 8 years helping many young scouts earn their badges.

He coached his sons’ CYO football teams and was his daughter’s biggest fan at her dance recitals and competitions. When watching TV, he was a sports and game show enthusiast. His corny sense of humor and natural storytelling ability will live on in his children and grandchildren. He was a great husband and father who would do anything for his family. Bob will be deeply missed by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In honor of Bob’s memory, donations can be made to the Hospice of the Western Reserve at hospicewr.org
