NEAL R. RICHTER

NEAL R. RICHTER, age 80. Beloved husband of 59 years to Joanne (nee Gorski). Loving father of Scott (Kelly) and Kevin. Cherished grandfather of Christopher, Olivia, Evan and Landon. Dearest son of the late George Figura and Florence (nee DeGorski). Also survived by nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. Neal helped develop the fire prevention code for the United States while on the job at the Shaker Heights Fire Department. Neal was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He attended Garfield Heights High School, Youngstown State University and the University of Florida. In his working career, he was a fireman, paramedic, and fire inspector for over 30 years in the City of Shaker Heights.  He was a court expert in the “Cause and Origin of Fires” and provided important testimony in many successful litigation proceedings.  He taught the first Fire Technology classes at Cleveland Community College and lectured extensively on the subject of Arson at Lakeland, Ohio State, Bowling Green, and Malone college.  Lastly, he was the past president of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 516. Neal loved football and gave back by coaching.  He coached Cleveland CYO youth football for several years.  He coached High School football for University School in the late 1970’s.  He also coached a semi-pro team in Cleveland in the early 1970's.  He was known for motivating his linemen by telling them to “Destroy Your Opponent’s Will to Play”. Neal was known as the “Clock Doc” and he had a passion and a talent for all things related to antique clocks.  He and Joan were well know for their “Appraisal Workshops” at the Strongsville Senior Center.  They also operated an antique booth in the Medina Antique Mall.  He was an active member of the National Clock and Watch Association. Lastly, Neal was a member of the Masons - Acacia Lodge #651.  He was also a 32nd degree Mason and Member of Scottish Rite. Celebration of Life Service Wednesday August 14, 2019 at 6:00 PM in the Gathering Center of the A. RIPEPI & SONS FUNERAL HOME, 18149 BAGLEY ROAD, MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS (WEST OF I-71).
