MICHAEL NICHOLS, age 74. Passed away peacefully August 1, 2019. Beloved husband of 51 years to Mary Ellen (nee Martino). Loving father of Laura Rankin (Tim), Andrew (Laura) and Sarah DeBrock (Matthew). Cherished and devoted Poppy to his grandchildren Henry, Rachel, Andrew Michael, and Hope Rankin, Benjamin, Samantha, William Michael, Alexandra and Adriana Nichols, Gavin Michael DeBrock. Dear brother of Adrienne (deceased) and Daniel. Also survived by nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus # 3019, Berea Kiwanis and a longtime friend of Bill W. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to any local food pantry. U.S. Merchant Marine and U. S. Navy Vietnam Veteran.
Mike was born on May 29th, 1945, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His favorite team growing up was the Milwaukee Braves, and he cherished their 1957 World Series championship. He graduated from Milwaukee’s Custer High School in 1963, and earned a Congressional appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy at King’s Point, New York. Mike graduated in 1967 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Engineering from the USMMA, and then served in Vietnam with the Naval Reserves. Mike married the love of his life, Mary Ellen Martino, on November 18th, 1967.
Mike had a successful business career, beginning as Chief Engineer for American Safety Equipment Corp, which brought he and his family from Long Island, New York to Strongsville in 1973. In 1974, Mike joined Gould Electronics (later Westinghouse), which began a 20+ year career with roles such as a Systems Engineer, Director of R&D, Technical Director on various development projects, and then finally as Site Supervisor in Newport, Rhode Island. Later, until his retirement in 2015, Mike wore various hats, including President and Owner of Ohio Telecard Co., Chief Engineer at Anderson Equipment Corp., Operations Manager with Yager & Light Paint Finishing Systems, and finally, as Quality Manager, Training Manager, and Safety Manager with Rosby Industries.
Mike loved helping others, and he did so through various community activities, including the Knights of Columbus #3019, the Berea Kiwanis Club (in which he once proudly served as President), along with volunteering at local food pantries. He was a grateful friend of Bill W. since 1984, and helped many people throughout the years.
Mike had a heart of gold and was always willing to go the extra mile for any friend or family member in need. No matter the situation, Mike let you know where everyone stood with him. He has left a lasting impression on everyone that he came in contact with.
The family is forever grateful for the outstanding care provided to Mike over the last year of his life by various care providers, especially Vitalia Assisted Living in Strongsville, along with Kindred Hospice.
Mass of Christian Burial Saturday August 10, 2019 St. Mary’s Church, 250 Kraft Street (Berea) at 10:00AM. (EVERYONE MEET AT CHURCH). Final resting place Resurrection Cemetery. The family will receive friends FRIDAY 3 – 8 PM at the A. RIPEPI & SONS FUNERAL HOME, 18149 BAGLEY ROAD, MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS (WEST OF I-71).
